Gum Disease Treatment

The number-one cause of adult tooth loss in this country is gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. Because symptoms are mild, many people don't know they have a problem. Others may notice slight redness, swelling, tenderness, or bleeding when brushing teeth. Without treatment, gum disease will escalate and could create a need for surgery and tooth replacement. This stealthy and vicious disease has also been connected with increased risk for heart attacks, strokes, respiratory problems, diabetes complications, low-weight births, osteoporosis, and other serious health problems. At your dental checkup, Dr. Leslie or Dr. Scott Strommer will inspect your gum tissues for signs of disease. If you are at risk for gum disease or show early signs, we may recommend altering your daily oral healthcare routine as a preventive measure. Certain mouthwashes and toothpastes can also help. Should you already have gum disease, we'll recommend gum treatment with a deep cleaning with our hygiene department.

In a deep cleaning, we may perform scaling to remove hardened plaque, called tartar or calculus, from below the gum line; root planing to smooth rough teeth roots where plaque often builds up; Arestin antibiotic to kill bacterial infection; and soft tissue laser debridement.
